9th Age Chaos Mortals

Hey dudes.

I can't comment at work, but I can make new posts. This is largely a reply to Jed's post about his empire army. I thought it would be cool to post my WIP list as well, and hopefully start a trend and some upbeat discussion.

I'm also going to mention the paint status of these models. This is mostly for me as a reality check. I think this chaos army of mine could really compete for painting, if I can buckle down and get it done. It sure is nice to not have to worry about exams.... suckers.

Without further ado........

Pagebreak!

Okay okay for real this time.

Lord (singular):

Slaanesh deamon prince (560)
 - wings
 -scaly skin(1)
 - plate armour
 - lucky/charmed shield
 - sword of skill/striking
 - lvl 4 wizard (slaanesh)

Ignore all that dumb stuff tzeentch is terrible. I'm going back to Slaanesh forever. I see some bonkers potential for stacking extra attacks, though might ( I was, still not bad though) be misreading it. Need to finish the base.

Hero:

BSB on daemonic steed, mark of slaanesh (265)
- barding
- great weapon
- bluffers helm
- lucky charm

Stock standard daemonic steed dude. No longer unkillable, but I like him. Need to finish highlights and basing.

Core:

dogs

18 Khorne warriors (395)
- full command
- shield
- halberds
- rage banner

This is something I never would have done in 8th, sinking 400 points in one foot slogging unit. But since chariots aren't core I'm low on options. I really want to get a character in here for 'inspire greatness'. That said, they're way cheaper than they used to be. About 6 more warriors, then basing, to complete the unit.

5 barbarian horsemen (120)

Same as before but they can have shields AND fast cav now. Awwww yeah! Barely started painting.

5 Slaanesh forsaken (90)

These bitches have skirmish now. By far the best core in the chaos book. I would totally mark them slaanesh except I picked up some really badass models that are covered in khorne markings. Honestly the filthiest core I can imagine is 2 units of slaanesh horsemen and then a bunch of 5 packs of these guys. Not even assembled

Special:

2 slaanesh chariots (115 per)

Yeah yeah, not core anymore. Boo. Both are close to finished, just a few highlights and basing to complete.

8 slaanesh knights
- command
- ensorcelled weapons
- banner of discipline

Forgot to mention, mark of slaanesh is both immune to panic and re-roll all charge/pursuit rolls making it, in my opinion, the best mark. Although +1 to hit seems good, re-rolls provide so much utility and variability to a unit, it's amazing. These guys won't be failing too many charges under my watchful eye. Need to do 2 more knights, plus finishing details on the rest of the unit.

5 boobsnakes (90)
-banner (cuz it's painted), do we need scoring units???)

I have/love these models. That's all there is to say about it. I slopped on some base colours a while back. A lot of effort to get these guys up to standard.

Spawn (65)

Moves 3D6 and has ambush. Way better than before, like, not even comparable.

Rare:

Chimera (230)
-breath weapon

Worse chimera, still a badass. 99% painted.

So yeah. Not too far gone from what I was playing previously. The knights are less of a hammer, but still good. The warriors will be the biggest test for me. Not letting them get ganged on by faster opponents is crucial. I'm trying to find about 150 points for a murder-priest, but I really like the list this far.

Also, to Jed, I have a load of gunners, pikemen, and pistoleros if you need models. I also have a little itty-bitty frame gun, which could pass as an organ gun.

I was overwhelmed at first by the magic items. Turns out most of them are the same as in 8th. All the fun, fluffy items from the chaos book are gone and replaced with super generic stuff. The 9th age crew seems more focussed on making a good game than including imaginative stuff. They're probably taking the better path, but I really loved some of those unique things like the shrine and chalice.

Thoughts?

  1. Looks like the core of your old list is viable then. You should take Tzeench magic cause it's way cooler. I'm glad those Chaos Warriors have a new lease on life, those models are too cool to fester unpainted in your Barbie drawer. I'm surprised they took out the shrine, or a replacement model...that struck me as a cool chaos big-beast, without having to be a vortex-mauler-octopod. And yeah magic items seemed toned down overall, can't say I'm sad about that.

  2. They toned down everybody's magic items. It seems like your list got less powerful, but so did everybody else.except maybe besstmen and brettonians, who needed a new book anyways. I am still fiddling with my list, for the same problem as you, im 150 points ove cuz I want a third character in my list. So many things won't work without him. I'm honestly glad the demonprince got worse he was a bit too badass before. Is he still unbreakable or does he have instability finally? Anyways I will post a similar update in a day or two.
I still find myself wanting to use units because they are painted rather then because they are good...corsairs still aren't better than fast cav in core I'm afraid. I'm glad you get cool foot troops but mine are lackluster.

    1. He's unstable, but also stubborn 9, which is fair actually. I changed him to slaanesh tzeentch was aweful. All the spells are still magic missiles and so worthless after turn 1. And of course use the cooler models, otherwise is foolsih.
